Introduction to Heading
Field Training | Saturday, Sept 4 | 11:00AM - 12:30PM | Full Field
Heading is an important part of the game, and a necessary skill for those players looking to play at the highest levels of the sport. Moreover, for the girls, it’s a great way to set themselves apart in front of future coaches and evaluators, and a strong, dominant header of the ball in the girls game is a tremendous plus for any team.
Though we touched on the technique last year, this is the first year that we are able to teach it to the players.
This heading progression is similar to the one Coach Buzz Lagos used to take us through when back when in the 1980s on the Minnesota ODP teams. Though I think other skills in the game have evolved a bit over time (dribbling and shooting for sure), heading technique has remained the same.
After the progression, we moved to my favorite heading competition - Heading Wars. Loved it as a player, love it as a coach. Players may be complaining of headaches after the progression is done, but they soon forget all about their woes once this activity begins.
